Why four signs have no animal β and what we do about it
The zodiac is a set of constellations, not a bestiary. Eight of them happen to depict animals, which is where the word zodiac comes from at all β the Greek zΕidiakos, the circle of little animals. The other four do not. Gemini is a pair of brothers, Virgo a harvest maiden holding an ear of wheat, Aquarius a figure pouring from a jar, and Libra a set of scales β the only sign in the whole circle whose symbol is an object rather than a living thing.
Those four are also the signs people search for most, which puts every site in the same position: say βthere isnβt oneβ and answer nothing, or name an animal and hope no one asks why. We do a third thing. Each page names an animal, and then says exactly which documented trait of the sign produced it β so the reasoning is on the page with the answer, and you can disagree with it.
Where the constellation is an animal, no reasoning is needed and we say so. Aries is the Ram because Aries has always been the Ram.
