Unbeknownst to Khan, Volga morphs into a Ferret. He gnaws through bowstrings and arrows, rendering the weapons useless. Then he becomes a Wolf, incapacitating the cavalry's horses. Finally, he reduces his army to an army of Ants, letting them march unnoticed to the gates before reverting to his human form.

Stripped of weaponry and transport, Khan's forces crumble — an account portraying Ferret as a master of stealth and subversion.

The Black-footed Ferret was often a significant part of Plains Indian ceremonies, as it was for the Pawnee, Cheyenne, Sioux, Blackfoot, and Crow tribes. Its symbolism overlapped with that of the Weasel, which had much in common with the Ferret. Because some tribes saw the Ferret as a Trickster figure, capable of doing both good and harm, this symbolism crossed tribes.

In Plains tribes, the Ferret was often seen as a powerful Medicine figure with benevolent traits. That odd appearance is probably a mistranslation. Instead of being "ferrets," the now-understood literal Hebrew word in that passage refers to a small lizard. You'll find it listed on Bible-translating websites: "gecko." That makes it unlikely the ancient text ever meant to mention the mammal today.
