Pigeon Facts: Crop Milk, Cher Ami and the Dodo

The dodo was a pigeon, and the magnetic beak that explained homing was never real.

The rock pigeon is the bird people stop seeing. It is also livestock that got out: Mesopotamian cuneiform tablets and Egyptian hieroglyphics suggest pigeons were domesticated more than 5,000 years ago, and a genetic study of 361 birds from 70 breeds found that escaped racing pigeons have probably contributed substantially to today's feral city flocks.

Almost everything widely repeated about pigeons has a firmer version and a looser one. The magnetic iron in the beak was overturned in 2012. The headline that pigeons diagnose breast cancer as well as pathologists rests on a pooled flock score, not on individual birds. The military record for Cher Ami is inconsistent enough that the Smithsonian says so in print.

What survives the checking is odder than the folklore. Both parents make crop milk. The bill works as a straw. The head locks in mid-air while the body walks on underneath it. And the bird you see everywhere has declined by 46% across North America since 1966.

Pigeon facts that hold up

  • Domesticated before most of recorded history. Mesopotamian cuneiform tablets and Egyptian hieroglyphics suggest pigeons were domesticated more than 5,000 years ago β€” a history with humans so long that Cornell says it is impossible to tell where the species' original range was.
  • Both parents run the nest. Cornell's life history has both adults brooding the young and feeding them by regurgitating a milky liquid secreted by the lining of the crop, with incubation split between them on a fixed daily shift pattern.
  • Crop milk is not milk in the mammalian sense. No mammary gland is involved. Both parents start making it a couple of days before the eggs hatch and feed it to the hatchlings over the first ten days of their lives. Flamingos and some penguins make a version of it too.
  • They drink by suction. Most birds scoop water and tip the head back to let it run down. A pigeon puts its bill in the water and draws it up like a straw.
  • The nest turns into pottery. Pigeons reuse the same flimsy nest without ever removing droppings, so the lightweight platform grows into a sturdy, potlike mound, sometimes incorporating unhatched eggs and the mummies of dead nestlings.
  • Thirty-one years against 2.4. A retired U.S. Army Signal Corps homing pigeon named Levi lived to be 31 years old. Feral rock pigeons average 2.4 years.
  • The everywhere bird is thinning out. North American populations declined by 46% between 1966 and 2015 according to the North American Breeding Bird Survey, against a global breeding population estimated at about 140 million.
  • No bird varies more. Domestic pigeons exhibit variation in more traits than any other bird species, and a genetic study of 361 birds from 70 breeds found that escaped racing pigeons have probably contributed substantially to today's feral city flocks.
  • The dodo was a pigeon. Genetic analysis places the Nicobar pigeon (Caloenas nicobarica) of Southeast Asia as the closest living relative of the dodo and the Rodrigues solitaire.
  • The biggest one alive. The Victoria crowned pigeon of New Guinea is the largest living pigeon β€” around five pounds, roughly the size of a large chicken, with a fan-like crown of feathers and 16 tail feathers instead of the usual 12. It lays a single egg per clutch.
  • They apply abstract numerical rules. Ordering groups of items by quantity, pigeons performed at a level indistinguishable from monkeys β€” an ability previously thought to be shared only with primates.
  • They can pick real words out of nonsense. Eighteen pigeons began training; the four best learned vocabularies of 26 to 58 four-letter words against a set of 7,832 nonwords, and correctly flagged words they had never seen before. This is not reading. The birds had no access to sound or meaning; they learned the statistical texture of English spelling, in a lineage that separated from ours more than 300 million years ago.
  • They were trained on cancer slides. Pigeons trained on breast-biopsy slides averaged 87% correct on images they had already seen and 85% on novel images, with equal learning at 4x, 10x and 20x magnification. On the harder task β€” spotting suspicious masses in mammograms β€” the birds memorised the training images and showed no reliable generalisation.
  • Head-bobbing is a vision trick, not a balance quirk. High-speed film shows the head locking in place while the body walks forward under it, then snapping ahead. The bobbing stops entirely when a pigeon walks on a treadmill, which is why it is treated as a visual response rather than an equilibratory one.
  • They hear well below us. Pigeons detect infrasound far below human hearing (Kreithen & Quine 1979). In a separate 2000 analysis, Jonathan Hagstrum reconstructed four pigeon races in Europe and the northeastern USA in which birds were scattered and delayed, and argued they had crossed Concorde shockwave paths β€” a proposed explanation, not an established one. How the map sense works remains unsettled, with infrasound competing against olfactory-map and landmark accounts.

What the popular version gets wrong

"Homing pigeons navigate with magnetic iron in their beaks β€” tiny built-in compass needles that science has confirmed." Treiber et al. systematically characterized the pigeon upper beak by MRI and CT and found the iron-rich cells were macrophages, not magnetosensitive neurons β€” their number and distribution varied unexpectedly between birds (inconsistent with a sense organ), their ultrastructure matched iron-recycling macrophages, and they carried MHC class II. The paper closes by calling for "a renewed search for the true magnetite-dependent magnetoreceptor in birds." Pigeons almost certainly do use a magnetic sense; the beak-magnetite mechanism that got into every textbook and museum panel was simply the wrong explanation.

"Uncooked rice thrown at weddings swells inside pigeons and doves and makes them burst." There is no case of it, ever β€” no photograph, no video, no veterinary record. A great many birds, from waterfowl to bobolinks, feed on rice in nature, and it is easily digestible; a crop and gizzard handle far tougher seeds every day. The story spread through advice columns and stuck. Cornell's ornithologists do note two real reasons to skip the rice at a wedding, neither of them avian: it is slippery under smooth-soled dress shoes, and it attracts rodents.

"Pigeons are rats with wings β€” walking disease bombs that will infect you if they nest near your window." New York City's own health department, presiding over one of the densest pigeon populations on Earth, rates the risk of pigeon-related disease as rare. Three diseases are genuinely associated with droppings β€” cryptococcosis, histoplasmosis and psittacosis β€” and all three are contracted by inhaling dust raised while cleaning large accumulations, not by a bird landing near you. The people actually at risk are those with compromised immune systems and workers clearing years of build-up out of air shafts. Wiping a windowsill is not a meaningful hazard.

The pigeon in public life

Popular culture carries two pigeons and neither one matches the bird. The first is the flying contaminant of the phrase "rats with wings," a creature you are supposed to fear on a windowsill. The health department of New York City, which oversees one of the densest pigeon populations anywhere, calls the risk of pigeon-related disease rare, and the three conditions linked to droppings are picked up by inhaling dust while clearing large accumulations β€” the hazard of an air shaft nobody has cleaned in years, not of a bird on a ledge.

The second is the laboratory prodigy of headlines: pigeons that spot breast cancer as well as a pathologist. The 99% figure behind that story is a pooled score. Researchers combined the votes of a flock of birds, and it was the flock that reached an area under the curve of 0.99. Individual pigeons ran nearer 85% on biopsy images they had not seen before, and when the task moved to mammograms they memorised the training set and did not generalise at all. The real result is still unusual β€” that a bird brain can be trained on histology at all β€” but it is not a bird outperforming a doctor.

Smaller folklore rides along with both. Uncooked wedding rice has never killed a bird and the advice columns that spread the claim never had a case to point to. And the most famous extinct bird in the world is filed everywhere except where it belongs: genetic analysis puts the Nicobar pigeon of Southeast Asia as the closest living relative of the dodo and the Rodrigues solitaire. Famous pigeons and their keepers

A February 1919 U.S. Army record credits Cher Ami β€” listed there as a "Black Check Hen" β€” with 12 messages from the Verdun front, average distance 30 km in 24 minutes, and a final 40 km flight in 25 minutes with a leg shot away and the message tube hanging by a tendon. The Smithsonian cautions that these records are inconsistent: military records cannot confirm which pigeon carried the Lost Battalion message, and DNA testing has since shown Cher Ami was male. The museum's own account of the bird is subtitled "A Century of Myth and Public Memory," which is the honest description of what a century of retelling did to a wartime file.

The longevity record belongs to another army bird. Levi, a retired U.S. Army Signal Corps homing pigeon, lived to be 31 years old, against a feral city average of 2.4 years β€” a gap that says more about traffic, predators and disease than about the species.

The most consequential pigeon keeper was Charles Darwin, who bred them for years after returning from his five-year voyage on the Beagle. What he was looking at was the sheer distance between fancy captive breeds and wild birds, and those observations helped him formulate parts of his theory of evolution. The raw material was well chosen: domestic pigeons still exhibit variation in more traits than any other bird species on Earth.
