Newt Spiritual Meaning & Symbolism

The 100+ species of newts live worldwide in marshes, meadows, and irrigated fields. Unlike salamanders, newts spend much more time submerged, and the look of males and females is very different — this gives newts a strong connection to duality.

They hunt under both sunlight and darkness, but hunt in their own preferred times.

The defining trait though, is that a Newt can regrow parts that have been lost. If a limb is cut off or an eye is damaged or part of the heart tissue dies: a newt can grow back those parts of itself.

Newts also play when they choose mates. When they choose a mate, the male releases a chemical scent in order to attract a female nearby. He puts his tail out and vibrates it in different patterns, which looks almost like dancing.

The 'eft' phase is when the creature spends most of its time out of the water, and it's often called their awkward middle. It's a strange time for them: they're not in their normal environment, and they don't yet look or act like the adult version that will eventually come into being.

Biologists love Newts because their thin skin lets them absorb toxins from the water around them. Their disappearance is a sign of pollution or that the environment has changed.
